SEPTEMBER 28, 2012

By Times-Dispatch Staff | Times-Dispatch

CHESTERFIELD, Va. --
The former treasurer for the Alberta Smith Athletic Association was sentenced Thursday to serve a month in jail after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of embezzling about $12,000 from the organization.

Circuit Judge T.J. Hauler sentenced Jennifer L. Harris, 34, of the 4600 block of Lakefield Mews Avenue, to 12 months with 11 months suspended as part of a plea deal that reduced her charge from a felony to a misdemeanor.

According to evidence, Harris used an association debit card to pay for roughly $12,000 in personal expenses from 2009 through 2011. A routine internal audit of the group's financial statements uncovered a loss of $12,770.

But Harris paid back much of the money before she was formally charged in February, said prosecutor Thomas M. McKenna. He said Harris has now repaid the remainder of the stolen funds — about $950 — and that money will be forwarded to the association.

Harris, who had no prior criminal record, will be allowed to serve her time on weekends working for a Chesterfield Sheriff's Office work detail picking up trash and doing other chores.
